“Nobantu Shabangu was announced as the winner in the Leopard’s Leap Wines and Open Book Festival Message on a Bottle writing competition. The announcement took place at the opening ceremony of the festival, held at The Book Lounge in Cape Town on 4 September.

“Led by British playwrights Leo Butler, Winsome Pinnock and international director Elyse Dodgson, Omphile Molusi, Neil Coppen, Napo Masheane, Amy Jephta, Mongiwekhaya Mthombeni, Simo Majola, Genna Gardini, Nobantu Shabangu, Tau Maserumule, Eliot Moleba and Khayelihle Gumede were taken through three week-long residencies to develop the project over 15 months.

“The South African writers shortlisted where SJ Naudé, Masande Nthshanga, Hans Pienaar and Nobantu Shabangu.”

“‘Candyland’ is about the sexual exploitation of a young black girl and the two women who help her to escape. Constance, who is black and in her middle years, works as a cleaner and lives on the same floor of the building where the girl is captured, while Amanda is a young white woman who wants to help her when she finds her in a home for sexually abused girls.”
